Talk Fashion to Me

The Short-Form Social Media Documentary Pilot on Fashion, Consumerism & Identity

A Master of Media Project

My Role: Researcher, Video Journalist & Producer

Originally titled Gen Scroll, Like and Add to Cart, this project began with an intended focus on Gen Z and the algorithm-driven shopping cycle they have found themselves in due to the mass production and social media marketing. However, as this interviews unfolded and I learned more and more as I researched the Australian retail fashion landscape, the my journalistic scope on clothing consumerism expanded.

My first conversation wasn’t just about scrolling and shopping. It was about memory, identity, economics, culture, values, accessibility and social pressure. Understanding and an openness to hear my interviewees experiences and perspectives as a Filipina Australian Baby Boomer was eye opening. It helped me see that purchasing accessibility and celebrating identity through clothing also plays a major role in our shopping habits. It is not just the narrative that young consumers are compelled to add to cart by desirable brand and influencer content. Naturally it is a lot more convoluted as the consumer.

So, the project evolved into Talk Fashion to Me, a title that better reflects the open, conversational nature of the documentary and my approach as a storyteller. We don’t just talk fashion. This is a dialogue driven by curiosity to learn about consumerism and identity within the context of fashion.
