SAM’S FIRST LOVE IS ILLUSTRATION
As a frilly-sock-wearing child growing up in country Victoria, Sam was very fond of storytelling through pictures. Her earliest illustrations were inspired by films, especially period dramas and those from the classic Hollywood era.
FILM ALSO HAS HER HEART
‘The Secret Garden’ (1993) and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ (1952) were two of her favourites. Sam adored the storylines, acting styles, bold costumes and set designs. She imagined herself being a part of these dazzling worlds. To place herself in them, she turned to illustration. Whether creating fashion or narrative illustrations, storytelling through creativity was (and still is) everything to her.
LITTLE GIRL DREAMS INSPIRE BIG GIRL AMBITIONS
As an adult, Sam recognised her desire to work in the fashion industry. She continued to illustrate, focusing mainly on textile prints for her sleepwear and accessories brand, Sam K Ryan.
Her designs embodied her playful nature, featuring vibrant colours and quirky motifs. Her brand was all about inviting the spiritedness of the child back into the adult’s world. Additionally, Sam works as both an in-house and freelance designer for other Australian brands and organisations.
SAM CONTINUED TO UPSKILL
With illustration as the foundation of her professional endeavours, Sam continued to pursue media and communications. Alongside her work, she has completed a Master of Media to expand her expertise in the areas of research, writing, and strategic communications for digital media and video content creation.
