Talk Fashion to Me
Introducing my social media documentary pilot on fashion, consumerism, and identity. Originally titled Gen Scroll, Like and Add to Cart, this project began with a specific focus on targeting Gen Z and the algorithm-driven shopping cycle the generation is wrapped in. However, as the interview unfolded with my Baby Boomer mother, Elena, my scope and journalistic aim expanded.
My first conversation wasn’t just about scrolling and shopping. It was about memory, identity, economics, culture, values, accessibility, and social pressure. Understanding and having an openness to hear my mother’s experiences, as opposed to assuming that Gen Z is merely falling victim to clever social media fashion marketing and influencer ads, was essential to see the picture picture.
So, the project evolved into Talk Fashion to Me, a title that better reflects the open, conversational nature of the documentary and my approach as a storyteller.
